Flamenco: Dance, Guitar, Sevillanas
Dance for Beginners
by Linda
My beginners' workshops are ideal for people who have absolutely no or hardly
any experience with flamenco. Where other teachers immediately start with steps
and arm movements, I like to start with a general introduction into flamenco:
the history, the different rhythms and styles, the guitar, the singing, the
artists etc. to give you a much better idea of what you are doing. Because
flamenco is not only dancing, or only singing, or only guitar, it is a whole
where all elements come together. And it is not only technique; it is also a
feeling, emotion, history. This is what I want to share with the participants of
my workshops, giving them a basis to continue with flamenco when back in their
own country. Also I would like them to enjoy flamenco, feeling and understanding
what it really is about.
Dance Intermediate and Advanced Levels
by Mónica and guest teachers
Mónica is a young dance teacher who grew up in Barcelona and recently came back
to the home town of her parents. She started dancing when she was only three,
had a lot of teachers in Barcelona and finally had her own studio there. She has
a very elegant, feminine style of dancing.
Regularly we invite artists to teach workshops at La Cartuja de Cazalla.

Sevillanas Beginners and Perfectioning Workshops
by Linda
Most people think that "sevillanas" is the same as "flamenco". However, although
the dance looks very flamenco, it is not pure flamenco. When you compare
flamenco with ballet, an individual artistic expression, then you can compare
sevillanas with a foxtrot, a social dance. Sevillanas, both the songs and the
dance, always have the same structure, the same rhythm, the same pattern, and
you can dance sevillanas with everybody at parties, ferias and fiestas.
Sevillanas in FUN! That's why we always start this dance workshop with the
music: listening, discovering the structure, clapping hands, working on some
lyrics (and sing along if you dare!). Personally I find it very important that
you "feel" the music before you start dancing. And if we do so, we start with a
warming up, the first steps, the first arm movements. Especially if you already
have some dance experience, in five lessons you must be able to learn the four
"coplas" of the sevillanas.
Perfectioning:
You know the steps of the four "coplas", but know you want more. More beauty,
more style, more confidence. In this workshop we pay a lot of attention to the
details, the finishing touch. We look for variations: slow and fast sevillanas,
with a "mantón", with a fan. But most of all: dance freely and ENJOY!
